{Neob Lavender Boutique, Niagara on the Lake}

This summer, S and I had the pleasure of visiting the Neob Lavender Farm in Niagara on the Lake. This beautiful establishment is home to several different types of lavender, as well as a boutique, a state-of-the-art glass to glass distillery to make essential oils, and several other plant families. The husband and wife team who own this farm/boutique also distill their own essential oils. They took us on a tour of the facilities, and I learned so much about lavender and the process of making essential oils...It takes a staggering amount of plant matter to make even a drop of essential oil...It's no wonder that genuine essentials are so expensive!

This place has been a favourite of my mother's for years, and she was so excited to share it with me. It was just so beautiful, and the intoxicating, omnipresent scent of lavender reminded me so much of the south of France...It really is a lovely way to spend a sunny afternoon. Don't forget to pick up a lavender plant to add to your garden. I'm vacillating between pink lavender and French lavender...decisions, decisions!

{Stencils: Love 'Em!}

It's no secret that I love the hell out of wallpaper...but it's also no secret that wallpaper can cost a pretty penny (over $300/ roll at Farrow and Ball). As of late, I've seen designers doing amazing things with stencils, and I thought I'd share some of my favourites. Now, if the word "stencil" has you shuddering, with visions of Jemima Puddle Ducks and grape leaves flashing hideously in your mind, fear not! These new stencils will certainly impress.

One of the best sources for stencils has to be Royal Design Studio. I can hardly believe these are actually stencils...they look so perfect!

What an awesome way to give new life a vintage piece of furniture. This would work well on bathroom cupboards and armoires as well!

I love this Moroccan trellis pattern so much! What a perfect way to add richness and detail to the space. I think the effect would be equally effective below the chair rail in the right circumstances.

A stenciled design would freshen up any concrete floor. I think it would look right at home in a solarium, on a covered concrete patio or in a basement.

I absolutely ADORE the use of stencils here to add interest to the rise of these stairs. They look gorgeous!

As everyone knows the worst thing about wallpaper is trying to remove it after it's been up for years. The best part about these stencils? When you're sick of them, you just paint over them. Easy peasy!

On a side note, Steve and I are going to see a house in the West end tomorrow that we're VERY excited about. Wish us luck! I'll let you know how it goes!

Well, friends it`s official. S and I are finally in the market to purchase our first home. We are fairly bursting with excitement to own our own piece of the city we love so much. We are currently looking in two very distinct 'hoods (read: the only two we can afford in Toronto...this city is NOT cheap) one is in the East and the other is in the West. We have ties in both areas, and although S and I both work East, getting from A to B is a relatively easy task. I am presently pulling for the Easterly neighborhood, but S isn't set on either in particular.

As many of you know, I am a researcher. I have been following the Toronto real estate market closely for about two years now...There are three things I know about this market for sure;

There are not a lot of homes for sale
There are many people who want to buy houses
There is no "good time" or "bad time" to buy in T.O...it's always buying season here, and you need to act fast

With these things in mind, it's easy to see why a buyer absolutely HAS to be savvy when trying to procure a piece of real estate...Basically when you see the house you want, you make an offer semi-immediately and over-asking for good measure. Think Southern California circa 2006, lite of course.

So we begin our house-buying (and hopefully renovating) adventures. We are currently in "education mode," which essentially involves going to countless open-houses until we are comfortable enough to make an offer on a house on the spot. We will definitely keep you updated in terms of progress as we navigate these waters.

In terms of what we are looking for, we have lists (yes, listS haha!) Let's begin with the "Must -Haves," shall we?

Must Have:

Structurally sound
Freehold ownership (NO condo)
Minimum semi-detached
Forced air/HVAC system
2+ bedrooms
2+ bath
Character
Parking
Yard
Good schools in the area

Ideally:

Not renovated
Fully detached
Garage
Central air
New windows
New wiring

As you can clearly see, our lists are neither extensive nor overtly specific. We know to overlook decor and furniture when house hunting...that's just good common sense.

You may think we're crazy for wanting an unrenovated home, but here in the T-Dizzle the trend appears to have been "buy a house, go to Home Depot, buy a bunch of crap for $200-$300 and put it up as quickly as possible while doing as much invisible damage as possible, then sell it for 50k more because it's RENOVATED!!!!!" Ugh! The LAST thing we want to deal with is some crazy DIY-er's hideous mess **aaaaaaand breathe, Alanna**

So, let the wild rumpus begin! Of course, we'll keep you posted!

I am a religious meal planner. I openly admit that I love flipping through my recipe books on Saturday afternoon and planning my meals and grocery lists for Sunday. I fully realize this may mean that I have a problem, and that most people do not derive pleasure from activities like this...for those people may I recommend "You've Got Supper."

Adventures in Macaronage!

Did I just do a happy dance in my kitchen? Maybe...YES!!!!!

Ladies and gentlemen, I can now cross one of my major life accomplishments off my list...here it goes! ~~Make Perfect Macarons~~. How did I do it, you ask? Not without abysmal failure.

Follow along with my adventures in macaronage...who knows, you may even learn some tips along the way! (NB: "macaronage" is defined as the art of making macarons)

For the recipe, I mildly adapted this one by Chef Chuck Hughes

You will need:

2 cups almond powder (500 ml)
2 cups icing sugar (500 ml)
4 egg whites, room temperature
1 cup sugar (250 ml)
1 cup water (250 ml)
pink gel food colouring
raspberry jam for filling

Process:

In the food processor, mix the almond powder and icing sugar together until it’s reduced into a very fine powder, for about 2 minutes. Add 2 egg whites and process until smooth (the texture will be similar to almond paste). Add the food coloring and continue processing until the color is all blended in. You can add a few more drops just until you get the color you want. Transfer to a large bowl and put aside.

In a stockpot, bring the 1 cup water and 1 cup sugar to a boil and cook for about 15 minutes, until reduced by half and syrup is coating the back of a spoon when dropped in cold water or until a candy thermometer reads 275*.

Using a stand or hand mixer, beat 2 egg whites until soft peaks form. Slowly add the hot syrup and continue beating until firm peaks form and the meringue has cooled.

With a spatula, gently fold in 1/4 of the meringue into the almond mixture. Continue folding the meringue until completely incorporated. The mixture will be shiny and smooth.

Fit a piping bag with a 3/8-inch (1 cm) round tip. Pipe the batter onto the baking sheets. Tap the underside of the baking sheet to remove air bubbles. Let dry at room temperature for 1/2 hour to allow skins to form.
Bake the macarons in a 300F oven for 20 minutes ON A DOUBLE BAKING SHEET (stack them for thickness to avoid cracking). Rotate the baking sheet half way through for even baking. Remove from oven and transfer parchment to a cooling rack.
Pair macarons of similar size and spread approx 1/2 tsp of jam on each all the way to the edges.

Allow to rest for 1 day to meld flavours...YEAH, RIGHT!

My tips for perfect macarons:

Do let them rest after piping for 30 minutes.
Double up on the baking pans to avoid cracking.

Admittedly this post is probably about two years late, but can I just say that I adore these little pennant buntings that seem to be popping up everywhere? As the weather warms up and S and I begin the process of shopping for our first *family* home together, I have visions of outdoor tea parties and backyard barbecues adorned with these little pretties...Not to mention nurseries, children's birthday parties, weddings...not that I'm getting ahead of myself. I'd never do a thing like that ;)

Les Macarons

I am, at present, obsessed with macarons. These slightly sweet, crunchy/chewy cookies are delicious but more importantly, they are simply beautiful. I think these cookies will one day eclipse the current cupcake craze...read: hope.

Several bakeries in my area make delicious iterations (read more about that here), and last weekend S and I found some amazing flavours at La Bamboche bakery. I was especially excited to try the salted caramel, but alas it was sold out...I guess I'll simply have to go again :) We opted instead for the Creme de Cassis, Lavender and Amaretto flavours...Oh.my.word. So delicious!

I HAVE to learn how to make these. You know I've been researching like a mad woman, and I think next week sometime I will take my first stab at them.

Ooooh! This makes me even more excited about my upcoming France trip...I anticipate LOTS of time spent at Ladurée!

Finally, winter has melted and the sun is smiling warmly. Spring weather calls for long runs outside, picnics in the park and dining and drinking al fresco. I, for one, can't wait! Lately I've been feeling light and energized...On those first sunny days of the year my body feels like it's absorbed all 980 trillion kw of the energy emitted daily by the sun. I think I am so lucky to live in a part of the world with four distinct seasons. Each one is a welcome change when it comes around.

When I think of spring and summer, I think of balloons...I'm not sure why, although I'd hazard to guess it has something to do with the fact that balloons are something one usually sees on a sunny day.

Chocolate Cherry Coconut Larabar Recipe...

My husband has been referring to me as "Pete Schweddy" this evening on account of my delicious, chocolate balls...But joking aside, of the 16 I made, zero remain. This is HUGE praise from S, as his reaction is usually lukewarm to sweets (he much prefers salty snacks).

Many of you have probably had a Larabar or two by now. These bars are delicious...but they hurt...deep in the pocketbook. At as much as $3 a pop, I can afford to eat about 1/2 a Larabar a month, which is simply not enough. This had me scouring their website in an effort to make a version of my very own. The Cherry Pie flavour seemed to speak to me, but then so did the Chocolate Coconut Chew...uh oh! A dilemma! Naturally I decided to try to make both...in one.

I know the basic Larabar principle is equal-ish parts of all ingredients. I watched a few Youtube versions and then I was on my way.

Here's what I came up with:

Ingredients:
-1 cup pitted dates, chopped (be sure to purchase pitted...sadly I overlooked this detail)
-1 cup dried, unsweetened cherries, roughly chopped
-1 cup raw almonds, chopped
-2 tbsp + 2 tsp cocoa or carob powder (unsweetened)
-1/2 cup shredded, unsweetened coconut
-1-2 tsp cinnamon (optional...I didn't use as I forgot)

Directions
-In a food processor, process pitted dates and dried cherries together into a paste. I added 1-2 tbsp of water to loosen the consistency...you could also use any oil you have on hand.
-Put processed dates and cherries into a medium-sized bowl.
-In the same bowl of the food processor (no need to wash...it's all going to mix together in the end) pulse the almonds until they are very finely chopped. Some of mine were almost a flour consistency while the rest were slightly more chunky. It's good to have a variation in texture, but don't process for too long, or you'll wind up with almond butter...not that that's a bad thing ;)
-Put the almonds, cocoa and coconut into the same bowl as the dates and knead until well combined. Tip: Wet hands make the dough easier to work with.
-Shape into bars or, as I did, balls. Use about 1/4 cup of the mixture for the bars and about 2 tbsp for the balls. You could even roll them in coconut or cocoa to finish.

I chose to roll the ingredients into balls after trying the little bouchées at one of my favourite raw, vegan, macrobiotic restaurants Kale Eatery. If you're ever in my 'hood...and you're into that kind of thing, give it a go. It's really, really good!

Paris, je viens!!

It's official!! SB and I have booked the trip!! Two weeks in Paris and a week in Nice, with side trips to Monte Carlo, Monaco and wherever else the wind takes us....All I can say is "eeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!!!"

We rented this cute little apart-hotel for the first two weeks. It has a kitchen, so I can bring yet another one of my life goals to fruition: cook an authentic French meal in France...

...and we booked this hotel in Nice...It's allegedly RIGHT in the middle of downtown.

All I can think of is this trip...which is not good given that I have several other responsibilities to attend to between now and August...including renewing passports and officially changing my name...Oh yeah, and teaching the babies, too!

Le sigh...Happy sigh!

Has it been so long? Updates!

Well, I suppose since I've been neglecting my little blog, I owe it an apology. It's always on my mind, but I haven't been up to making the time...Primarily since I've joined Swap-Bot this adorable online community of snail-mail lovers sends each other trinkets, teas, candies and crafts through the post. I am, at present, obsessed! Additionally occupying my mind is our upcoming three week France vacation! I am positively vibrating with excitement!! We're renting a little Paris apartment for two weeks, then spending a week in Nice, exploring the French Riviera. I absolutely can't wait to really immerse myself in the French culture, language and food.
A few weeks ago (more like 8, ha!), Steve and I saw the Canadian Opera Company's production of The Magic Flute. It was a dream-come-true for me to see this particular opera live, as I have been listening to it since I was a little girl. Needless to say, I was reduced to tears on more than one occasion. If you have the opportunity to see it, I strongly, highly recommend.
The time has come for spring cleaning, so I must aweigh to continue with that most arduous of tasks...but since I'll be following the checklists outlined here, it should be relatively pain-free.

Dining Room To Be...

I basically have my entire future house planned out in my mind, which all of my home-owner/home shopping friends have told me can lead to nothing but disappointment...But honestly? I can't help myself! I see gorgeous pieces and I instinctively imagine how they would look in their "ideal setting" (aka my house...Natch.)

This board is a very rough sketch of what I have bouncing around in my head with regards to my future dining room...

The Breakdown:

The wall colour is Coventry Grey by Benjamin Moore. We have this colour in our present space, and I absolutely adore it...so I think I'll stick with the tried and true in this case.

The wallpaper here is from Target, and it's been discontinued...it's not ideal anyways. I am sure we'll wind up with wallpaper from Romo Designs. I just can't get enough of them!

The gorgeous Edison Chandelier from the Pottery Barn is a true show-stopper. I love it's Industrial Chic-vibe...a little nod to my husband's engineering roots.

The grey upholstered Cody Chairs from West Elm will sit at either end of the table to balance the vintage chairs we purchased mid-month, which I will be reupholstering (in the same-ish fabric as the Cody chair) and spraying (cream or white...) when I have spare moment.

The Angle Leg Table is in the cards for the next couple of weeks. It's expandable with self-contained leaves. It's the perfect piece to really grow with us. Our initial idea was to go Ikea and just trash it when we buy, but why waste $200+?

The drapes shown here are Pottery Barn velvet blinds, but I'd definitely go with the Thai Silk drapery from Restoration Hardware if we were talking our forever home.

The Madison Distressed Convex Mirror from Restoration Hardware makes my heart happy...but the $675 price tag leaves me with visions of a diy tutorial to come.

I already own the Glamour Clock and it's one of my favourite pieces. I think it would fit perfectly in my dining room for a bit of sparkle and polish.

Well...I guess I'll just continue to patiently wait for "Snowmageddon"...here`s hoping for a snow day tomorrow!

Easy-Peasy Art Project...

This art project is perfect for pulling a room together. It's inexpensive, AND it's easy...double bonus!!

All you need to complete this project is:

-Two canvases in the size of your choice
-Three or four paint colours that coordinate with your space (try picking from a fabric or bedspread in the space for a super-easy palette...you can also "layer" colours for more depth by picking different shades in the same family) Buy $3 test pots for the best quality paints.
-A neutral background colour (cream or white)
-Painter's tape in various widths
-Paint brushes

Instructions:

1. Paint the canvas with two coats of your white or cream paint.
2. Randomly space your tape to create nice straight stripes in various sizes.
3. After you have taped out the stripes, apply a light coat of your background paint over top of your tape, paying special attention to the seams. This will prevent the paint from bleeding through.
4. Allow the paint to dry fully.
5. Paint stripes in a pattern of your choice.
6. Remove the tape before the paint dries to avoid peeling.

You don't have to be an artist to create simple, custom art pieces for your home...you just have to give this simple technique a try! Let me know if you do!
I'll show you how I used these pieces in my bedroom when I do the reveal later on this week.

Vintage Chair Love!

These past two weekends have been a whirlwind of activity. Last weekend was spent scouting, sourcing and redesigning my bedroom with one of my dearest friends (pics to come later this week) and the weekend before was spent antiquing in Niagara, which totally paid off...S and I found a set of five dining chairs to refinish for $25 each! Needless to say, we were thrilled...They weren't QUITE gorgeous when we found them, but I knew that with a little elbow grease, they would really show their potential.

The set only has one armchair, which is totally fine because we want to get two upholstered chairs for end chairs to go with the table we want (to be revealed later on this week, since S got a night school job, it's totally a "go!")

I decided to refinish the single armchair to use as an occasional chair in our bedroom. It got a few coats of high-gloss black lacquer, and I recovered the cushion with a silk blend and added a bit more padding...Since they say a picture is worth a thousand words, feast your eyes if you will:

Done and Done !

Look at the pretty trellis detailing!! It makes me so happy!

Ode to Spoonflower

Spoonflower is a website that allows members to create their own fabric from any image that can be scanned. Members create fabric from paintings, photographs and photoshop drawings. For my wedding I created fabric out of the paper that I used throughout. The fabric turned out quite lovely, but I didn't end up using it for the day.

Many Spoonflower fabrics are made by independent designers, graphic designers and other industry professionals, but I love the fact that anyone with an image to upload can crank out some custom fabric. Probably the best part about Spoonflower? You can purchase fabrics designed by other members...

Here are a few I've had my eye on:

How delicious would this Cake fabric be in a shabby-chic dining room as a runner, or place mats or even upholstery on some vintage reupholstered chairs...Nothing takes the "stuffy" out of your grandmother's antique dining set like a touch of whimsy!

You know I had to...this Queen Daisy the Boston Terrier fabric is soooo cute! I can imagine it in a little girl's bedroom or on a cute bag.

This Puppachutes and Flying Piggies would be lovely as an accent in a little boy's nursery.

I would love to see this Sterling Rose fabric on some accent chairs or pillows in a grey and butter yellow living room.

The Mustache Gallery is adorable...although I have yet to come up with a practical use for it...perhaps just frame it for a piece that brings a smile.

This Cherry Blossom fabric is a contender for the reupholstered chair to go into our bedroom.

Bedroom Redux!

Hello-hello!

After a very involved FB discussion about paint colour, S and I decided to go with a colour that is almost IDENTICAL to what we have on the wall...'cuz we're just THAT brave.

The colour is called Wheat Sheaf by Benjamin Moore.

So with that decided, we are off to the races. Here is the inspiration board for the bedroom. The palette is chocolate and pink and cream...

We scored some GORGEOUS vintage chairs from the antique store by my parents house. We got five for $125! Considering our first choice costs almost $200 each, I think we did OK. Only one of the chairs has arms, so that one is getting refinished to go in our bedroom. The others are in storage chez mes parents until we have a table.

I'll keep you posted on our progress!!

Tutorial: Cashmere Hand Warmers

I was totally inspired by these gorgeous mini hand warmers by Restoration Hardware this past Christmas:

The thought of toting around those adorable little cashmere gems in my pockets, keeping my fingers toasty on a blustery day really appealed to me for obvious reasons. What did not appeal to me however, was the $35 price tag...no matter how cute they were. I resolved to make them myself using the same principles as making a heat pack.

This easy little project can be completed in under thirty minutes with things you have around your house. I used remnants of the felted cashmere sweater I used on this cashmere water bottle cover.

You will need:

- Four pieces of felted wool 3.5 inches by 5.5 inches (cashmere is obviously what I used, but you could use any type of wool or fabric you have around)
- Flax or rice to fill your warmers (approx 1/2 cup per warmer)
- Sewing machine
- Needle and coordinating thread
- Straight pins.

Directions:

1. Pin two of the pieces of wool together on three sides leaving one of the short sides open. Be sure right sides are facing:

2. Stitch all the way around three sides of the bag, leaving the one unpinned short end completely open.

3. Turn the bag right- side out and fill it 3/4 full with the flax or rice. Be sure not to overfill the bag. I used a paper funnel for this.

4. Tuck both raw seams in and pin. Be sure both warmers are the same size.

5. Using a needle and thread blind stitch the seams together. I am out of practice so please forgive my horrendous technique.

6. They should turn out something like this:

and if you're more careful with your blind stitching, they will look even better...

To use them, put them in the microwave for 45-60 seconds, then simply pop them in your pocket. They'll keep warm for at least an hour. These would be great for hockey games, outdoor sports and sporting events, yard duty (for us teachers) and after dinner winter walks.They'd make a cute gift, too!

**I sincerely apologize for the terrible pictures in this post. The lighting is horrendous, but as it gets dark around 4pm and I'm a procrastinator, it'll have to do.**

S'mores Galore

Today I'm on snack duty at work, and since I have been meaning to make s'more cookies since the Everyday Food recipe was featured in the Toronto Star in December, I thought this would be the perfect opportunity.

S'mores are, bar-none, the most delicious campfire fare out there. I feel qualified to say this as a former Girl Guide...we ate a LOT of campfire food...I can even make a griddle out of a coffee tin for making pancakes, but I digress...I have also made this Bobby Flay barbecue s'more recipe for a cookout I hosted one summer. They were a MAJOR hit.

Naturally I altered this recipe slightly (especially the process), but it is adapted from this one by Martha.

Ingredients

1/2 cup old-fashioned rolled oats
1 cup all-purpose flour (spooned and leveled)
1 cup whole-wheat flour (spooned and leveled)
3/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, room temperature
3/4 cup light-brown sugar
1 large egg
1 tsp vanilla
2 large milk chocolate bars divided into 24 squares (or 24 Dove individually wrapped pieces)
12 large marshmallows, halved horizontally

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In a food processor, pulse oats until finely ground. Put the oats into a large mixing bowl and add flours, cinnamon, baking soda, and salt; whisk to combine.

2. In a large bowl, using an electric mixer, beat butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in egg and vanilla, scraping down side of bowl.

3. With mixer on low, beat in flour mixture just until combined.

4. Drop dough by tablespoons, 1 inch apart, onto a baking sheet. Bake just until lightly golden, 7-9 minutes.

5. Remove from the oven and top each cookie with a chocolate square. Return to the oven for 3-4 minutes. Remove cookies from oven again; heat broiler.

6. Top each cookie with a marshmallow. Broil until marshmallows are lightly browned, 1 to 1 1/2 minutes. Transfer cookies to wire racks to cool.

These are soooo delicious.

Super-Easy 1940's Vegan Cake

Okay, so the fact that this cake is vegan has less to do with any type of ethical conviction and more to do with necessity. The recipe was borne of the need for something delicious, while still adhering to familial rations of the war era...and it doesn't disappoint...It's an excellent, budget-friendly snack cake that I'd recommend for an anytime treat. I iced mine with a sour cream icing (just used what I had on-hand) but for an everyday treat it can be eaten without the icing. It's a nice "surprise" in your lunch box...that you put there yourself...

You can find many iterations of this recipe online...I can't even remember where I found this one...It's scribbled on the back of a used envelope, as I am wont to do.

You will need:

1 1/2 cups all purpose flour
1 cup sugar
3 heaping tbsp cocoa powder
1tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt
6 tbsp vegetable oil (I used butter, as we are not rationing :)
2 tsp vanilla (pure)
1 tbsp white vinegar
1 cup cold water

Directions:

1. Preheat the oven to 350*. In an 8 inch square baking dish, sift all of the dry ingredients together.

2. Make a well in the centre of the dry ingredients and add the wet ingredients.

3. Stir to combine.

4. Bake for 35-40 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the centre comes out clean.

While you are baking the cake, why not whip up this delicious Sour Cream Icing I found on Cooks.com

You Will Need:

1 cup chocolate chips
6 tbsp butter
1 tsp vanilla
1/2 c sour cream
2 1/2-2 2/3 cups icing sugar

Directions:

1. In a double boiler set over (not in) simmering water, melt the chocolate and butter together until smooth.

2. Remove from heat and add vanilla and sour cream. Beat with electric mixer until combined.

3. With the mixer on low, slowly add the sugar 1/3 cups at a time, until the desired consistency is achieved. If you put this icing in the fridge for a few hours, it will firm up nicely.

When the cake has cooled, spread with the icing and enjoy...I know I did!

Wedding Wednesday: Adorable DIY Favour Ideas!

I think that favours are probably my favourite wedding element. They not only help you personalize your special day, but they're also a lovely way to thank your guests for making it so special. I have compiled a few of my favourite wedding favour ideas from my favourite wedding bloggers.

This first idea combines my love of favours with my love of terrariums. It would be simple to do with some fishbowl vases from your local craft shop and some succulents from your local garden store. Throw in a few shells or river rocks, and voila! I was considering this as an option for my own wedding, but I think it would be really well suited for an eco-conscious wedding or a woodland theme. Find out more from Martha...it's her idea after all!

This lovely idea would be the perfect way to showcase fabric or paper that incorporates your colour palette for your day, and as a bonus, it would double as a centrepiece...just be sure there's one per guest (vary the height and volume for visual interest) and be sure guests know they're meant to take them as they leave. I found this idea at I Do It Yourself...check out this resource...it is amazing and invaluable with tons of free printables and great ideas.

These DIY ice cream favours from Style Me Pretty would be perfect for an outdoor summer wedding.

These matchbox covers are a classic idea...You can find the template here and you can mix and match computerized fonts and designs or you could go really wild and calligraph your own..hooray for typography!

Finally, since the importance of presentation cannot be overstated, I have found some lovely cut and fold boxes (including the butterfly one below) here to put something lovely into...like, oh, I don't know...some truffles or Parisian macarons...

Simple and Delicious: My Mom's Apple Crisp

Nothing warms a home like the smell of cinnamon and apples baking away in the oven. I sincerely love making apple crisp...especially this recipe.

For the topping you will need:

1/2 c all purpose flour
1/4 c brown sugar
1/4 c white sugar
1/3 cup rolled oats (not quick cooking)
1 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp salt
1/4 c cold butter cut up

For the filling you will need:

6-8 Granny Smith apples (enough for about 2 inches of apples in an 8 inch square baking dish)
3 tbsp sugar
2 tbsp all purpose flour
1 tsp cinnamon
1/4 tsp nutmeg
2 tbsp butter (optional)

Instructions:

1. Preheat the oven to 350*

2. In a large bowl, combine all ingredients for the topping except the butter and stir to combine.

3. Add in cut up butter, and using your hands work the butter into the ingredients until it is well-integrated. The topping should form pea-sized crumbs.

4. Set the topping in the fridge until you are ready to use it.

5. Peel the apples (bonus points if you can peel them in one coil...it's a game I like to play...I know...but I can't help it)

6. Core the apples. I use a melon baller for this task...waaaay easier.

7. Slice the apples, and in the baking dish, toss them with the sugar, flour cinnamon and nutmeg meant for the filling.

8. Dot the apples with the butter for added richness...or skip the butter...it's optional. Sprinkle the reserved topping on the apples.

9. Bake at 350* for 50-60 minutes

10. Enjoy!

This is delicious served with vanilla ice cream as a simple dessert. It's also stellar for using up apples that are too soft to eat out of hand...I've been eating it for as long as I can remember and it never gets old.

Welcome 2011

I must admit, I am sad to say goodbye to 2010. With a wedding, honeymoon, new job, lots of new friendships forged and the acquisition of a soda stream, it will be hard to top. I am moving forward into 2011 with the sole resolution to get more organized...luckily for me, an unfortunate NYE accident has rendered me house-bound, so I'll have a lot of time this weekend to put my plans into action. Lots of closets to clean out, and unused items to give away.

As you may know I love to meal plan, I am currently using this lovely scribble menu planner from the lovely, artistic folks over at Ollibird.

I am planning to make it more permanent by printing it onto magnet paper and laminating it, so it can hang out on my fridge.

This lovely alternative option offers a bit more space and more organizational possibilities.

A Back to School Recipe

This week marks my return to the world of the working. I'll be teaching French to students in grades 5-8. All. Day. Long...although honestly, I couldn't be more thrilled about it! I'm also putting together two choirs; one at each of my schools. To say that this new schedule will take some "getting used to" is an understatement...At any rate, I don't anticipate being altogether too thrilled to cook up a meal every evening. Enter: my slow cooker. The following is a recipe that I have returned to time and time again, because it's so darn good...It's also a lovely fall transition recipe, and you'll have tons left over for lunches!

Chicken Orzo Soup

You will need:
2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
1 large onion, sliced into thin half-moons
2-3 cloves of garlic, minced
2 stalks of celery, chopped
2 carrots, sliced
6 chicken thighs cut into bite sized pieces
2 chicken bouillon cubes
1 tbsp balsamic vinegar
2 bay leaves
1/2 cup dried orzo
pepper to taste

1. In a large skillet, heat the oil and saute the onions, garlic, celery and carrots together in the pan until the onions are translucent, about 5-8 mins. Add them to your slow cooker.

2. In the same skillet, add the chopped chicken thighs and brown completely (they don't need to be cooked through). Put the browned chicken pieces into the slow cooker.

3. (Optional) If you have the time, and you're inclined, "deglaze" the skillet, by adding about 1/2 cup of water and bringing it to a boil while scraping up the brown bits at the bottom of the pan. Add this liquid to your soup for another "flavour dimension." You can completely skip this step if you're pressed for time.

4. Add six cups of water to the slow cooker, the balsamic vinegar, bouillon cubes, bay leaves and pepper. Cook on low for 7-8 hours.

5. 15 minutes before serving, add the raw orzo to the soup. Cover and flip your slow cooker to "high."

Enjoy! Happy back to school!

Note: You can also use any leftover cooked chicken you have on hand to make this soup even easier. Just shred up about 1-2 cups of precooked chicken and skip steps two and three.

I have decided that I will keep up with Wedding Wednesday in spite of the fact that my wedding is over. I still find myself researching colour palettes, and "shopping" on Etsy for one-of-a-kind wedding details and I think that if wedding planning is still one of my interests, my blog should reflect that.

This week's palette is a peacock theme. I think that if I hadn't done my "Pink, Cream and Gold/Marie Antoinette-inspired" theme, I would have almost certainly done a peacock theme.

Whole Wheat Sweet Potato Gnocchi Recipe

Growing up as an Italian-Canadian, homemade gnocchi has always been a staple in my diet. I spent hours as a child in my grandparent's basement, watching them work seemingly endlessly making all types of pasta, but my favourite was always the gnocchi. I was always so amazed that a pile of flour, mixed with potato could become the little flavour-bombs I love so well. My grandparents also make gnocchi using zucchini as the binding agent when the garden overflows with them in late July. Zucchini gnocchi is so light and delicious...maybe that'll be a recipe for another day.

My sweet potato gnocchi recipe was created because I wanted to make a slightly healthier version of my favourite old standby...plus I loooooove sweet potato. I would recommend tossing these gnocchi in a little sage- scented brown butter for a decadent treat, or just serving them up with a marinara for a healthy, hearty dinner.

The process of making gnocchi employs the Italian "quanto basta" measurement technique...literally, "until it's enough." So if you're looking for an exact recipe, you won't find it here. I'll do my best to explain exactly what you should see and feel, but rest assured, even if you mess up, the results are usually more than acceptable.

You will need:

- 2 large sweet potatoes
- 3-4 cups of whole wheat flour
- 1 large egg
- salt and pepper to taste

1) Prick the potatoes all over with a fork and roast them at 400* for approximately an hour. Your knife should slide effortlessly through the flesh. Halve the potatoes and let them cool for
10-15 mins.

2) Scoop out the flesh of the potato and put it into a large bowl. Mash the flesh and discard the skin (or eat it as I do...mmm, fibre!). Mix together the flesh, egg, and a little salt and pepper. Then slowly add about 1-2 cups of flour. You should have a sticky, gloopy mess at this point.

3) Turn this sticky, gloopy mess out onto a well-floured work surface, and sprinkle liberally with flour while kneading the dough. Continue adding flour until the dough is easy to handle...It will still be slightly sticky, but you can work with it at this point. Don't worry about adding too much flour, just use what you need. When you have finished kneading, cut the dough into quarters.

4) Roll each section of dough into a 12-15 inch long tube. (Think: kindergarten play-doh centre antics). Try and keep the tubes the same-ish width. Use more flour here if necessary.

5) Cut each tube into pieces. I make my gnocchi about 1cm, you can make yours longer or shorter.

6) In order to ensure the gnocchi holds some sauce, you'll need to give it some ridges using a fork. Hold the fork in one hand and place the gnocchi on the fork. Press and roll the gnocchi with your thumb. Like this:

This will create both ridges on the top:

and a well underneath to catch sauce. This is a very important step. You can skip it, but you may regret it!

7) Allow the gnocchi to dry for about 15-20 mins. If you are cooking them immediately, use a large pot of salted, boiling water. The gnocchi will need about 2-3 minutes to cook. You will know they are done when they float to the top of the pot.

8) If you are freezing them, Don't cook them. Place them in a single layer on a plastic-wrapped baking tray and flash freeze them for about 2 hours. Store them in a large freezer bag. To make from frozen, allow them to thaw and just follow the cooking directions above.

As an aside, I also made fresh whole wheat linguine using my new Kitchen Aid stand mixer attachment...but I think that's a recipe for another day!

Since I'm guessing most people have already received their wedding invites, I doubt my mother would be too averse to me writing about them now.

My wedding invitations were a huuuuge labour of love. It began a year ago, when we first got engaged. The cherry blossom chiyogami paper on the front is really the jumping-off point of the colour palette and the theme for our day. I literally hand cut, hand tied and hand-mounted every.single.invitation...I did have some help in the final hours, which is great because I think I would scrapped the entire endeavour without it.

If you read my blog you know: I LOVE to DIY, but I HIGHLY recommend leaving the job up to the professionals (unless you quit your job to plan your wedding:) In the end, they turned out beautifully and I wouldn't have been able to afford the same quality materials had someone done them for me...so I guess it's all for the best.

This is the entire invitation "suite" as it were...

The invitations were printed on this embossed cherry blossom paper by Peninsula Press...They look a little wonky here, but this was before they were flattened out properly...

The reception card and the response cards, too! No wedding crashing, please! :)

Pretty Favour Packaging...

I cannot express to you how thrilled I was to find these lovely coasters at Kate Aspen.

They are in keeping with our cherry blossom theme, and they are pretty to boot! In terms of packaging these little treasures, I went to my go-to people at Paper Source where I picked up this pretty matte brown wrapping paper.

I tied it all up with a band of my signature chiyogami, and topped it off with a golden bee. I think they turned out really well...Now all I have to do is stamp a pretty golden "thank you" and we're done done done! I have so many projects on the go right now, as it's getting down to crunch time! I'm definitely excited, but overwhelmed at the same time...at least the invites are good to go. I'll post them here next week.

Latest Wedding Idea...Coming to Fruition!

If there are any of my former readers left out there, you may remember me salivating over these place card holders by Paloma's Nest.

These beauties would be perfect on our day, however at $58 for 6, they were considerably out of our budget. I was disappointed for about 1.4 seconds, whereupon I realized **I could just make them myself!** Here's the plan:

I haven't got anything to show you yet, but thanks to my extraordinary cousin, I should have these babies in two weeks! I am currently in the process of drawing up the invites which will be printed and mailed next weekend.

Everything is coming together...I just have to breathe...

Also, as the wedding draws nearer I am trying to be more careful about what I am eating...in order to further motivate me to do so, I am going to be posting a link to my food journal everyday at the end of the day...Once I figure out how.

I apologize for my extended hiatus, but I cannot promise I'll be back to posting regularly any time soon. I have been insanely busy over the past few months, and I must say, March has been quite rewarding in terms of career gains...To reference my January goals:

Essentially, I have made some major gains in the career field over the past few months, and I am proud to say that I am a gainfully employed teacher (for those of you not aware of the situation for teachers in Southern Ontario, this is a MAJOR cause for celebration!) I am teaching French and Grade 1 and 3 science and social studies in a school just east of Toronto. While I'm not guaranteed work in September, it is a lot more likely that I'll get something now that my foot is in the door.

Wedding plans are moving full steam ahead. I have some pics to post in the next few days. All the save-the-dates have been sent, 1/2 the favours have been packaged, and I am going to be getting a head start on the menus and the programs over the next few weeks...Just 100 days to go.

I'll update more regularly now that my life is a little more on-track. Big changes take a while for me to adjust to...

One of my New Year's resolutions was to read two books a month and review them here...I actually read four this month, so I'll review the best two:

Shanghai Girls by Lisa See is a beautiful story about two young sisters born in Shanghai to a wealthy business man and his wife. They live a privileged, modern life (by Chinese standards) until their fate takes a turn for the worse. The are forced to move to America, where they find themselves living a life they never expected. This is a heart-rending story about the bonds of family, the importance of tradition and the plight of immigrants of visible-minority to America before the civil-rights movement (many of the sentiments, I am sad to say, are still entrenched in the hearts of North Americans today.) I love Lisa See, and have read several of her books, I also love historical fiction...I would highly recommend this book, especially if that genre is of interest to you.

Still Alice by Lisa Genova was an incredibly well written story about a brilliant Harvard professor in her early forties who develops early-onset Alzheimer's. The story is written from Alice's point of view, and it chronicles her journey as she tries to identify with her family and herself as her brain, and the life she once knew, deteriorates. It's a story about redefining self-identity, the strength of familial bonds (again) and it offers keen insight into the mindset of someone suffering from Alzheimer's. Once again, I highly recommend this novel...It will certainly make you hold your friends and family a little bit closer. NB: Read with Kleenex close at hand.

I'll be joining the book club at the Oakwood branch of the Toronto Public Library starting in March. I've already read the February book, so I figured I could wait. I've also booked our hotel in Ottawa for Winterlude this year. I can't wait for a weekend of skating on the Rideau, eating beaver tails, speaking French and spending time with good friends....
I'll also be taking a pottery class and starting up with yoga again as soon as my job at Oxford officially ends in three weeks. Not that I'm counting :)

Dodgeball Champions!

This past weekend was one of the best I've had in a loooong while! S and I play in a charity/birthday dodgeball tournament called "The Budd Cup" put on by a few of our good friends. This year the tournament benefited the victims of the earthquake in Haiti, and it also went to promoting artistic endeavors for at-risk children. We had so much fun, and I really improved my game...our team, The Harlem Globedodgers (aka the American Apparel team...just look at the photos and you'll see what I mean), even went on to win the tournament! I've got a few of the 445 (yes, 445) photos that S took of the day. I have mostly included photos of myself, not because I'm narcissistic, but because I don't want to share photos of people on my blog that haven't given me permission to do so...No one likes getting in trouble with the law.

Ready to play...looking sufficiently deceptively innocent, complete with a Stephanie Tanner-worthy side ponytail.

Catching turned out to be my new-found skill. I even caught two balls at once...but as cool as it looked, it technically meant I was out, because you can only handle one ball at a time...

Throwing was certainly NOT my skill...the ball weighs nothing, and I was trying to throw it like a baseball.

On My iPod: La Roux!

Have you heard of La Roux? Since the release of their first album this past summer, I have been listening non-stop and I am totally in love! My current band-crush hails from Brixton, England and is headed up by the adorable (and self-described androgynous) Elly Jackson. Their sound is a distinctive mix of synthpop, folk music and Britpop...hence the fact that they cite such influences as David Bowie, Depeche Mode, Joni Mitchell and Madonna.

La Roux literally means "red-haired one" in French...although grammatically speaking it should be "Le Roux" (don't worry, I'm not going to get all "French teacher" on you!) Apparently Elly chose the name on account of her red hair, but she chose to mix the feminine article (La) with the masculine noun (Roux) to further illustrate her penchant for the androgynous...Pretty clever, but also pretty obscure :)

I've included the original single off their self-titled debut album, which was released in Canada on July 28, 2009. The song is called "In for the Kill" and I'm loving the Night Rider feel of the original video, but you'll have to click through this link to view it on YouTube as their record label has disabled embedding abilities. You may have also recently heard a remix of this song on a video game ad for Bayonetta.

There are so many awesome songs on the album, it's well worth picking it up on itunes...plus it's a steal at only $10!

What's In Your Bag?

Several of my fellow bloggers have done "In My Bag" posts in the past, so I in no way take credit for the idea...I just love it. I openly admit I am weirdly interested in seeing into the lives of random women...On more than one occasion I have zeroed-in on a person idling in her car at a red light, examining a nutrition label while grocery shopping, or performing some other equally-mundane task and thought to myself "I wonder what her life is like..." I suppose it's why I read blogs with such fervor...It sates the voyeur in me. With the rampant popularity of blogs, I can only assume I'm not alone in this guilty-pleasure.

I really do think that the contents of a woman's purse reveal a lot about her, and mine is no exception...Take from them what you will :)

Perfume Samples: Currently I have Madame Jean Paul Gautier, Idole by Armani and my old standby, J'Adore by Dior. It seems I have a very Rachel-esque (Friends Reference Alert!) talent for acquiring cosmetics samples.

iphone: Merry Christmas to me...Loooove this baby. So many features I didn't know I couldn't live without! How did I map my runs, book my dinner plans and navigate the streets of Toronto before Dec. 24, 2009? I can't even remember.

Gum: I know, I know...it should be mints, but they never last long enough because they always leave a bad aftertaste, thus prompting me to take another and perpetuate the cycle.

Also in my bag, but didn't make the cut: Tide to Go pen, H&M sunglasses and rabbit skin gloves.

There you have it...A mini-window into my life.

On another note: Four more weeks until I am finished at the job I left...trying to "grin and bear it." In order to get me through, I am planning my future "free time" like a madwoman.

A Prayer for Haiti

I, like many, am shocked by the earthquake in Haiti. The destruction and devastation of a part of the world already so seemingly forsaken has the cynic in me asking "Why?" The fact of the matter is, the damage has been done...all that we can do now is focus our efforts on helping to rebuild both the nation's infrastructure and its faith in humanity. I will be donating to help the Red Cross' efforts in Haiti, and I urge everyone to consider donating whatever you can to help the relief effort...even of it's simply a prayer to whomever you believe can make a difference.

Well friends...I have made a HUGE decision this week, which has been the cause of my hiatus: I quit my full time job...This decision has been well thought out, and in fact I will be likely bringing in the same amount of money or more working at my part-time job...I'll also have the option of having a life, which is a lovely bonus. I'll be teaching more, but the best part is, I feel like I can FINALLY live the life I thought I had to wait six months for....It's all beginning this February, and I can hardly wait!

Today has been a quiet, peaceful, lazy day. Outside it's snowing gently and a pot of beef stew is bubbling away on my stove. Tonight I'll be watching a movie curled up with my honey on the couch.

I have had a lot of time today to reflect on the past year, and how excellent it has been...but even so, I am itching to get started on 2010. I just KNOW it's going to be the best one yet...and the best part about that is knowing that I really do have control over it. I know there are certain things that I don't get to have input on, but what I do control is how I react to the bumps in the road. If I can maintain a positive outlook, keep my faith, and surround myself with the people I love then everything will turn out as it should...

Wedding Wednesday- Flowers and Palette

I have finally picked my florist...After meeting and chatting with so many wonderful girls, I have decided to go with Wine Country Floral. We chose Shelly because she has lots of experience, she is clearly passionate about the flowers I have chosen, and she does gorgeous work. Seriously...go check out her website.

I think I've mentioned before that our palette for the day is pink and cream with brown and gold accents, but for the flower scheme we are also going to infuse a little bit of a soft green. My inspiration for the palette comes from this gorgeous Japanese paper from Paper Source:

This picture doesn't even begin to capture how truly stunning this paper really is. It's a thick, fabric-like material, and the pattern is actually silk-screened. The white background is pearlescent, and the entire design is outlined with gold (which doesn't come through at all on the picture.) Essentially, I purchased this paper based on the picture thinking it was lovely, then when I pulled it out of the box, I almost fell off my chair.

My original hope was to have cherry blossoms as my flowers throughout...That fell through when I was told that they are only in season in March and April. I didn't lose heart though, since I knew that my FAVOURITE of all flowers, the peony, was still barely in season, and my paper would still make sense based on the rest of the colours.

The best part about choosing peonies is that my mother (an avid gardener) has THE most gorgeous and abundant peonies in her backyard garden. I'll be able to incorporate some of her flowers into my bouquet, making it even more personal and special...

See? Perfect!

I originally wanted pink hydrangeas, which meant my florist would have to spray white ones, since pink is apparently not a natural colour for hydrangeas...I was not really into that idea, so when the "antique" hydrangea come to my attention, I was thrilled. This light green beauty has a hint of pink blushing on the tips of the petals.

We'll be using these in the centrepieces with cream peonies, and hypericum berries, which are these little beauties:

The corsages and boutonnieres will all be constructed with cymbidium orchids and green hypericum berries.

I am too excited to get a few mock ups done so I can post more specific pictures....I'll get to it!

Happy New Year

The time is drawing nigh to really start to reflect on the past year, and decide what aspects of myself I want to change or improve upon. I, like 99% of people, am TERRIBLE at keeping my New Years resolutions...but that never stops me from trying! This year, my focus is going to be not on what I want to do LESS, but what I want to do MORE...I know it seems like semantics, but research has shown that wording goals positively has a higher rate of success...so here it goes!

This year I resolve to

1. Be active MORE consistently: I am the type of perfectionist who does nothing if she can't do it perfectly....That means if I miss one workout during the week, I call the week a write-off and resolve to do it perfectly starting next week. The only problem with this system is that I inevitably repeat the cycle...every.single.week.

2. Eat MORE vegetables: I must admit that I already do quite well on this front, but there's always room to improve.

3. Speak MORE French

I suppose rather than listing everything I want to do this new year, I could sum it up by simply saying that I want to live a more inspired life this 2010...I want it to include more creating, designing, trying new things, and rediscovering old hobbies (ice skating, anyone?). You know I'll be chronicling my adventures (and misadventures) here...so you'll be well informed of my progress.

Lucky you, right?

No matter where you are this New Year, I hope it's the best one yet!

Curried Chicken Pot Pie Recipe

I have been AWOL for the past week, and for that I apologize. It seems the expectations of the season have left me with little time do anything else. Today I am hitting the shops to find myself a Christmas outfit, and round up some last minute gifts. For dinner, I'll be using my leftover chicken curry to make a delicious chicken pot pie...you can make one too, using this recipe:

Curried Chicken Pot Pie
Recipe adapted from Canadian Family

Ingredients

* 2 tbsp olive oil
* 1 cup diced sweet onion
* 2 cups sliced carrots (1/4-inch thick)
* 1 15oz can chickpeas, drained and rinsed
* 1 tbsp hot curry powder
* 2 tsp kosher salt
* 2 tbsp all purpose flour
* 1 tsp finely chopped ginger
* 1 tsp finely chopped garlic
* 1 can (400 mL) coconut milk
* 1 cup chicken stock (low sodium)
* 1 (2-lb) store-bought rotisserie chicken, meat removed and shredded (about 4-5 cups)
* 2 tbsp chopped cilantro
* 1 sheet frozen puff pastry, thawed
* 1 egg lightly beaten

Directions

1. Preheat oven to 400˚F.
2. Heat oil in a Dutch oven over medium-high heat. Add onion and cook, stirring often
for 3 minutes or until soft. Add next seven ingredients. Stir and cook for 2
minutes. Add coconut milk, stock, chicken and parsley, and season with salt and
pepper. Bring mixture to a boil and simmer to thicken, about 3-5 minutes. Remove
from heat, smooth top to level out mixture and set aside.
3. Roll out thawed puff pastry sheet lightly. Cut pastry to fit over top of curry
mixture in dutch oven. Vent mixture by cutting slits in the dough with the sharp
point of a paring knife. Brush the crust lightly with the beaten egg. Bake 30
minutes or until crust is golden brown and filling bubbles. Let stand 10 minutes
before serving.

Tip: If you don’t have a Dutch oven, sauté onions in a large pot. Then add remaining 11 ingredients as per recipe instructions. Transfer to 11 x 9-inch ovenproof dish, top with pie crust and bake.

Enjoy it, and keep warm!

It's a {Green} Wrap!

I know that we are all trying to be as ecologically conscious as possible these days, but the Christmas season does tend to make that a little bit more difficult. It seems that "consuming" is the name of the game when it comes to Christmas...There is just so much waste from product packaging, to wrapping paper, to tissue, to ribbon, to gift bags, to gift tags and gift cards...it's a LOT to be throwing away on December 26th! But what can we do? Unwrapped gifts lack the elements of anticipation and surprise, so that's not an option for me, but neither is buying rolls of wrapping paper only to rip them up and throw them away! I have scoured the internet for the best wrapping ideas I could find, so that I could pass them along to all of you...Enjoy!

Once washed and turned inside out, chip bags make pretty wrapping paper...

Furoshiki is the Japanese art of wrapping presents with fabric. I would HIGHLY recommend checking out the link to learn more...You could use any fabric you have laying around the house, or incorporate the wrapping as part of the present..a silk scarf, a vintage handkerchief or a cashmere throw would all make sumptuous wrapping/present options.

Try sewing your own fabric gift bags using this simple tutorial...

Maps, especially vintage maps, make gorgeous wrapping paper...

Newspaper- especially the comics

If you have children, replacing wrapping paper with one of their prolific pieces of artwork will put it to good use...

Calendar pages make interesting wrapping material...

You could also use ornaments in place of bows...Why not try this tutorial to make a felt bow? I can be used year after year...and it's LOVELY!

I know it's extra work to wrap your presents in these ways, but it's WELL worth it...buying something for the sole purpose of throwing it away is soooooo 2001.

Wedding Wednesday...Updates!

So, as per the genius idea of my friend Suzy I have sent my Save the Dates with my Christmas cards. For all those I don't personally know (and there are a few of them coming to my wedding) I will be sending them out after Christmas. I'm not sure if I ever posted the finished product, but here they are...

I had them done by ADT in Niagara. They did an amazing job, and I would recommend them to anyone! I am going to be using their services for my wedding banner too...more on that later.

I have ordered my cake topper...I opted for the birds instead of the monogram. I am over monograms...they are totally overdone.

I am also considering an aisle runner with the "Oh Happy Day" saying on it and our bee...I'm looking at about $200 minimum for that though, so I may have to rethink that one...or I could just find a way to do it myself for less...

Finally, The Nutcracker has Arrived!

I LOVE ballet. It's one of the most beautiful forms of artistic expression. The levels of skill and strength required to perform well are astronomical, and even more impressive considering this skill and strength comes from impishly-thin women often suffering from some form of malnourishment or osteoporosis. But I digress...I am TOO excited that my favourite show has returned to the National Ballet, and I am not missing it this year. Thus far I have missed Gisele and Sleeping Beauty...I think I have watched MORE than enough hockey to finally warrant a trip to the ballet. Enough said.

I have been in love with Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker score since my very early childhood. I love to listen to it while I wrap presents, get my Christmas baking and cleaning done, or while I complete any Christmas-related task. My parents, of course, noticed my love for the music and thus took me to see the show at the age of eight. I was mesmerized by the opulence of the set, and the grace of the ballerinas. That experience has stayed with me, vividly for many years...and now it's time to go back. I watch it on television nearly every year, but it's NOT the same...

Weekend Recap

Wow! It seems as the weeks get closer to Christmas, the days go by faster and faster! This weekend flew by, but it was packed full of fun! On Friday we went to our friend's housewarming party...met lots of nice people and, although they're just getting set up, I can tell the place is going to look AMAZING!

On Saturday, I spent the day making some stockings for Steve and I. I used a French toile de joie pattern, and I think they turned out quite well.

I'm thinking about embroidering our names on them in cream on the cuff, but I haven't decided for sure yet.

On Sunday we had the in-laws for dinner, so we mostly spent the day cleaning...you know how it is...Thanks to the Smitten Kitchen and The Martha (of course) I made quite a delicious dinner, if I do say so myself. I HIGHLY recommend all of these recipes. The roast recipe is one that I use over and over, because it's so darn delish...and the brussels sprouts recipe is my new favourite veggie recipe!

A Soup to Warm Your Soul

This soup is my adapted version of the French classic, Cassoulet. It's hearty and delicious, and it promises to warm you from the inside out on the chilliest of winter days. Enjoy!

Cassoulet
INGREDIENTS
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 large onion, finely chopped
5 slices bacon sliced
1 lb pork loin cut into 1-inch cubes
3 links PC Blue Menu Light Italian Sausage sliced into rounds
3 cloves garlic, minced
2 tbsp herbs de province
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
1 28oz can diced tomato
1 cup white wine (I used riesling, but you can use any you like)
1 cup chicken stock
1 can (about 15 ounces each) white kidney beans, rinsed and drained
3 tablespoons minced fresh parsley

DIRECTIONS
Cook bacon and onion in large skillet over medium-high heat, drain off some of the fat. Add sausage and pork to pan and cook 8-10 minutes, or until pork and sausage are browned. Pour wine into pan and scrape up brown bits off the pan as it reduces. Transfer to slow cooker. Stir in remaining ingredients in slow cooker. Cook on low 8-9 hours

Late, Late, Late Wedding Wednesday

So I have just realized that I am 6.5 months away from walking down the aisle. While that may sound like forever to some, to me it seems like tomorrow. If it were tomorrow however, the only regret I would have is not getting into some wicked shape before the day. With Christmas and the general stress of being a "grown up," I have definitely not been as diligent with my fitness routine as I have been in the past...So much so that I am actually canceling my membership to my beautiful gym in the new year...$100/month when I've gone like 12 times tops makes NOOOOO sense. I have a free gym in my building, and I use that much more often.

I've found a few plans that I can likely institute without too much trouble, but I like this one from the knot the best...But if I REALYY want to be hardcore the January issue of Oxygen has a pretty good routine too...decisions, decisions.

My fitness goals have less to do with being hot walking down the aisle, and more do with de-stressing and generally trying to get more healthy...oh yeah, and I'll be wearing bikinis for two weeks straight on my honeymoon. If that's not inspirational, what is?

Last night I encountered this gorgeous La Vie Grand Marnier commercial...It's predominantly orange, of course (pssst...in case you didn't know, Grand Marnier is an orange liqueur) and it reminds me of the art on some of the books my mom has kept from her childhood in the '60's.

My Handmade Christmas Wishlist

Although these are not the same vendors as at the show, their work is comparable...and they're considerably less expensive. I found this sparkly faux-boxwood wreath at Homesense for about $15. It wasn't quite what I had in mind, but I knew that with a little panache, I could make it work. I found the assorted pink Christmas balls for $1.99 for 12, also at Homesense...I already had the 24 gage wire from another project.

This is what you'll need.

I know the wreath looks supremely boring here...just try not to fall asleep. It gets better, I promise!

Cut a 4 inch piece of the wire using wire cutters (or scissors, if you're brave like me). Loop the wire through the eye on the ornament. Twist it a few times to secure, then place it where you want it on the wreath.

Secure the ornament to the wreath form by twisting the wire.

Continue on until you have placed all of the ornaments on the wreath.

Put it up on your door and watch through the peephole as all your neighbors walk by and admire :)

This same technique could easily be adapted to fit your colour scheme for the holiday season. You could also add pine cones, nuts still in their shells...think walnuts, pecans and basil nuts...not peanuts or pistachios...or other types of Christmas ornaments (birds could be cute). Be creative and have fun with it!

Upcycled Doggie Sweater...

Some of you may remember my idea to make a new dog sweater from this post. Well, friends...it isn't pretty, but I've done it! I used one of Loki's other sweaters as a pattern, and started chopping and stitching, and this is what I came up with:

My initial hope was to just shrink the sweater enough to fit him without a single snip or stitch...although he was cooperative in trying, I was NOT a success.

Overall, it's not my best work, but at least it fits him, which means my skills are improving! My initial instinct when sewing is "get 'er done," which leads to rushing and sloppyy work. It takes ALL the willpower I have to go nice and slow, and get it done neatly. I'm a work in progress, what can I say?

My Favourite Christmas Cookie Recipes

I have rounded up the recipes I seem to make over and over again at Christmas for friends and family. Some of the recipes lend themselves well to freezing, which is a bonus because that means you can get started on them right away...You're only going to get busier! They also lend themselves well to my handmade pledge...and they're all delicious!

Slice and Bake Cookies from The Smitten Kitchen

She's got several options for add-ins, which make this recipe a versatile choice. The recipe can be frozen in logs, and sliced when unexpected company pops in over the holidays. I like to keep a batch in my freezer, just in case.

Snickerdoodles from Bakerella

These cinnamon-rolled cookies are crispy and they melt in your mouth. Apparently they are a pretty popular cookie in the states, although I'd never hear of them until a few years ago. I can see why though...these go down really easy with a glass of milk!

Chocolate Gingerbread Cookies from Martha Stewart

These cookies are made with fresh ginger, which makes the flavour really pop. It also keeps the cookies moist and chewy. They don't have the "crunch" of the original, but they're far superior in my opinion! The ginger tends to be "stringy" if you just grate it, so I suggest pulsing in a few times in a small food processor or chopper (yet another use for your Slap-Chop!).

Chocolate Chip Cookies from Anna Olsen

DO NOT relegate these cookies only to Christmas. They are the most delicious version I have ever tried, and I do a lot of baking. They are quick to whip up, but they don't last...so make them closer to your event or you risk having only crumbs to serve.

Holiday Biscotti from Giada Di Laurentiis

I make these year after year, and they are always in high demand. I have also substituted the same amount of chopped dried cherries for the cranberries, and the same amount of roasted almonds for the pistachios, I used orange zest instead of lemon and I added 2 tsp of vanilla. After baking, I dipped the cooled biscotti in chocolate (bottoms only), and my family went nuts. They're truly delish.

Chocolate Macaroons from DLTK

This is a childhood favourite. It's a no-bake recipe, and it takes seconds to whip up. This is similar to the actual recipe that I use, which is my mama's...so you know it'll be good.

Mini Cherry-Pecan Streusel Loaves by Martha Stewart

I give these loaves as gifts and as stocking stuffers. It makes a great addition to the breakfast buffet on Christmas morning, or as an accompaniment to your coffee on boxing day.

which you can purchase through King Arthur Flour. They'd look perfect wrapped in a vintage tea towel or linen napkin and some kitchen twine.

I'm Dreaming of a Pink Christmas...

With Christmas quickly approaching, I am experiencing those proverbial "visions of sugarplums dancing in my head." As soon as my birthday is over I really start to gear up on Christmas...This year I'm anxious to do something different and unique...something pink!

A few years ago, this photo in the December issue of Martha Stewart's now defunct Blueprint magazine really sparked my imagination.

These gorgeous vintage mercury glass tree toppers are the first on my list to find. I've seen a few on Etsy, but I have yet to purchase one. I actually owe my parents one too, because I smashed one from my grandmother as a child...

A wreath like this one is also on my list of things to make...but I only have four weeks, so I'd better get a move on!

These gorgeous German vintage ornaments will soon be mine...hopefully! They are absolutely exquisite, n'est pas?

I love the idea of displaying the ornaments in interesting vessels around the house. I've just purchased a new apothecary jar just for this purpose...

In terms of natural decorations I have some pretty bowls to fill...I'm thinking dragon fruit, pomegranates and lychee fruit, nature's little christmas ornaments. I can't wait to start the decorating on the first week of December. Lots of crafting, lots of scouring vintage shops, and lots of baking to come! Stay tuned!

Antiquing in Niagara

My hometown has a bevvy of lovely antique shops and boutiques featuring tchotchke of varying quality and price-points, but it is rare to find one that balances both perfectly. Vineland Antiques, however is the exception. It's located in Vineland's turn-of-the-century (the 20th century, that is) Red and White General Store, and many of the store's original features have been preserved. The original cash desk still stands, and the wood floors and tin ceiling call to mind the days of yesteryear...The service is lovely, and the wares will definitely have you drooling.

My mom and I spent the afternoon shopping the boutiques, especially the antiques (I suppose you could say we went "antiquing," but it just sounds so stodgy to me...) here are some of the lovely things to be had at Vineland Antiques...

The One of a Kind Show is Coming to Toronto!

Since I have taken the Handmade Pledge this year for Christmas gifts, I've challenged myself to come up with presents for friends and family that are unique, sustainable, but also something they may not have thought of themselves. That means no Christmas lists for me this year, which can be a stressful prospect. It's always easier to shop for someone when they tell you the want an iPhone 300, or a paticular DVD or CD...but it actually takes some thought when you shop handmade...and don't we always say that it's the though that counts?

It seems that every year toy stores massively recall items after Christmas, citing lead or some other toxic substance that may harm us...not to mention the BPAs or PVCs that have been linked to cancer and other ailments. I firmly believe a child can be just as pleased with a lovely handmade toy as he is with something purchased at Wal Mart or Toys R Us, and they'll be healthier too...

But since there is no "Handmade Wal Mart" so-to-speak, where will I be doing my Christmas shopping this year? Well, hence the title, it's going to start at the One of A Kind Show which runs from November 26 to December 6 at the Direct Energy Centre in Toronto. Tickets are $10 online or $12 at the door. The show features the work of hundreds of artisans, and there is something for everyone. This year the show will be expanding to include crafting workshops, which can be purchased for an additional fee. You can dowload the Gift Guide on the official website, which will help you shop prudently for everyone on you list.

After that, I'll be heading to the City of Craft Show on Queen Street December 12 and 13. For only a $2 admission fee, you can browse local craft vendors to your heart's content. I'm looking forward to some amazing finds!

Both of these craft shows offer viable alternatives to DIY crafting, but stay tuned each week for a craft posting each week until Christmas this year if you're more of a DIY-er...I'll be scouring the internet to find the loveliest crafts that you can make with a little panache and some elbow grease...Technically, I think that's more in the handmade spirit anyways, right?

Wedding Wednesday...Save the Date Revealed!

Without further ado, here is the save the date that I created (with the help of my fiance, of course)...I am going to add the website to the bottom and the "Formal Invitation to Follow" tag line, so if it looks unbalanced, don't worry...it'll be perfect soon...

These will be going out within the next few weeks, I just have to corral addresses.

I wanted to feature the gorgeous work of Etsy seller Paloma's Nest here on Pint-Size, because she is one of my favourite vendors on the site. Caroline Vasquez is the owner and artisan. She has been a featured seller on the front page of Etsy, she has also been featured in several major bridal publications...i.e. Martha Stewart Weddings and she is lovely to do business with. She works with natural materials, predominantly clay and wood, to create simple and unique heirloom pieces for weddings, or any special occasion.

Steve and I purchased this wedding ring bowl, in spite of the fact that we don't have a ring-bearer...it was too beautiful to pass up, and it would look stunning in a shadow box as a memento of the day...

I loved that it matched the cherry-blossom theme and, of course, ours says 'Oh Happy Day!'

As the items pile up on my to-do list, I become more and more stressed, and the only way to deal with the stress is to get things done...

Fish Babies...

As promised, I am posting some pictures of the babies that my crazy little Spotted Molly had last week. I noticed she was becoming quite plump, but I thought I was just over-feeding her. Of course it crossed my mind that she MAY, potentially be pregnant...but, fish lay eggs right? Wrong. Not these fish. Apparently Spotted Mollies breed like rabbits, and have live births to boot...but unlike rabbits, they usually eat their young...or do rabbits do this too?

There were probably thirty little babies, and they are tiny and transparent. It doesn't appear that their mother has successfully eaten very many of them either, because they tend to hide in among the pebbles on the bottom of the tank with the catfish, who would rather eat scum than them (smart, right?)

The proud mama...Her girlish figure has returned to her.

I honestly have no idea what I am going to do with all these fish...we only have a ten gallon tank, which can hold 5-6 Mollies comfortably. Anyone want a fish?

Felted Hot Water Bottle Cover Tutorial

I hope you all had a lovely weekend. I know I did...some relaxing, some celebrating milestones with friends and family, and even some crafting. I finally created the felted hot-water bottle I'd been dreaming of for oh-so-long, and if I do say so myself, it is my chef d'oeuvre to date! I have a semi-tutorial to share with you, but I must admit, by the end I was concentrating so hard, I didn't even take a single picture...try to follow along if you're so inclined.

Felted Water Bottle "Tutorial"

You will need:
- a hot water bottle
- an old sweater that you have felted (see tutorial on that here)
- old newspaper
- pins
- sharpie
- scissors
- sewing machine

Plain and hideous...

Looks Promising...

Trace the whole bottle on the newspaper using the sharpie:

Carefully cut up the sweater, along the seams is best. It shouldn't fray if it's properly felted.

Cut out the pattern and fold it in half length-wise so it's symmetrical ("hot dog fold" is the technical term, I believe) then fold the fabric in half and ensure the folded seams of the fabric and the pattern are on the same side. Pin the pattern to the fabric:

This piece will be the front of the cover. If you are cutting the neck out, be sure to include that in your pattern, I decided to get clever and reuse the neck of the sweater for the bottleneck. The technique I used was confusing as anything, so I recommend you just keep it simple and cut it out as part of your pattern.

To do the envelopment back, as I did, use the pre-fabbed sweater hem to make your job easier. Fold the pattern in half and cut it out for the inside envelopment fold.

For the outside, fold the same pattern into a 3/4 fold, and be sure to trace the bottle neck on the top of this piece (this will be the outside fold)

Topstitch a hem on the neck of the bottle on both the front and the back (no pic, sorry)

Pin the whole shebang together, right sides facing. Whichever of the back pieces you want to be the outside portion of the envelope fold should be on the inside now:

Stitch around the outside of the bottle holder and turn right-side out. Be sure not to sew to top of the bottle neck shut!!

You are finished! Enjoy!

The Cherry Blossom Girl...

Have I mentioned that I love all things French and vintage? Only every time I open my mouth, I know! Well, I have been following the blog of a young Parisian woman for almost a year now. Her name is Alix, and her blog is called The Cherry Blossom Girl. If you have never been to her blog (and you may have, as I guess she's quite a famous blogger in France) you must go immediately! Her blog is written in French, but Anglophones needn't worry, as there's a translation following each post.

Alix is a graduate of a Paris school of fashion, where she studied haute couture (I know, right...jealous!) and fashion design. Her eye for "Paris street-style" certainly shines through in each of her photos, where she shows off her outfits as she goes galavanting about her city. Alix has an uncanny ability to see the beauty in literally EVERYTHING! If you would scoff, and pass it by, Alix would sigh and take a photo...but the interesting thing is, if the same person who scoffed looked at her photo...(s)he too would be inspired. I love her blog because it reminds me everyday that the world really is a beautiful place...

As one of her adroit commentators posted, her bedroom calls to mind something Alice in Wonderland would sleep in...complete with hand painted pink walls, vintage collections throughout, and...vintage teacups <3...le sigh...

The site also features a Parisian girl's guide to several major cities...Paris included.

Monogram Tutorial...

I love the idea of a custom monogram. These beauties can be used for a wedding, or for any general stationery purposes. I know it's bad luck to use a monogram before the wedding (hence my own clever idea, to be revealed later on in this post) so it's a no-no on the invites, but at the reception, it can be used judiciously. Here are some examples of monograms that I whipped up using Microsoft Word...I love to mix and match fonts, and try different styles. I know that I'm certainly not a graphic designer, but I think they turned out quite all right.

I created this monogram of sorts to go on our Save the Date magnet cards...

Incidentally, we chose this image as the background of the magnets...Hopefully I'll have more on our Save the Dates for you next Wednesday

I made this semi-traditional version for a more formal event. It would also be lovely as the cover of a thank-you card...

This, more tailored version would suit a more modern affair...

Now for the how-to:

Step one: For each name, symbol or letter you want to have in your monogram, create a new text box. Vary the fonts and the font sizes for more visual interest.

Step two: To format each text box select "no fill" and "no line." That will ensure that you will be able to layer your letters without having to deal with borders...

Step three: Arrange the text boxes in the formation that you like.

Step four: Admire.

Easy, right? If anything is unclear, comment and I'll clarify it for you....Just use your favourite fonts, and your creativity to create a monogram that represents you and your significant other.

Now for my oh-so-clever idea to incorporate our "initial" before the day. Since our last name will start with a "B," I thought, 'why not incorporate a "bee" in lieu of the actual letter?' I have always LOVED vintage honey bee stationery, so it was a perfect solution. I found a gorgeous vintage bee stamp on Etsy, bought a gold stamp pad and went to work. The effect is somehing like this:

I think the effect is absolutely stunning...and ultimately, when it comes to a wedding, that's all that matters.

Natural cleaning products: Keep the earth squeaky clean, too!

I would say that I have a mild obsession with keeping my house clean. This obviously means I use a lot of commercial cleaning products. I currently use Method products exclusively. These environmentally-conscious products feature biodegradable materials, and derive all fragrances from essential oils. I am absolutely in love with the lavender dish soap, and the almond oil "Good for Wood" floor cleaner. The company refers to itself as "People Against Dirty" but by that they "don't only mean the stuff dust bunnies are made of" they also strive to keep the earth clean as well. Their objective was also to create a product that people wouldn't feel had to be relegated to "under the sink"...and indeed the MOMA-worthy packaging makes these products not only functional, but also attractive...Honestly? Advertising was invented for people like me.

See what I mean? Lovely...

Although I adore my Method cleaning products, I often found myself wondering what products people used to clean before the advent of commercial cleaners. When I began researching recipes for cleaning products that use only the following natural household items:

- water
- vinegar
- baking soda
- borax
- lemon juice
- essential oils
- castile soap
- washing soda

All Purpose Cleaner
- 2 cups warm water
- 2 tsp borax
- 1 tsp castile soap (or liquid dish soap like Ivory)
- 3-4 drops of the essential oil of your choice (I recommend tea tree oil for it's disinfectant properties)
Spray on surface, leave for one minute, wipe with a damp cloth.

Glass Cleaner
-Pure white vinegar
Spray on glass surface, wipe off with a piece of newspaper for a streak-free shine.

Toilet Bowl Cleaner
-One or two teaspoons of castile soap
-1/4 cup borax
Swish around in bowl with a toilet brush and let sit for 30 minutes before flushing.

Abrasive Cleaner
-Two or three tablespoons of baking soda
-Enough lemon juice to make a thick paste
Spread paste over area to be cleaned. Let sit for two or three minutes then scour in a circular motion with an abrasive pad.

Laundry Detergent
- 1 cup Ivory soap flakes
- 1/2 cup washing soda
- 1/2 cup borax
Use one tablespoon for lightly soiled loads and two tablespoons for heavily soiled loads.

Now that we're on the topic of laundry, let's talk dryer balls. Some of you may have seen "eco-friendly" balls like these made by Nellie's Natural

Love to them in general, aside from this one faux pas...

These balls are definitely more eco-friendly than using a sheet or two of Bounce in every dryer load (they are better for you dryer to boot) but some a manufactured using Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC), which is one of the most toxic plastics available. There are PVC-free varieties available here, but they are still going to spend a bazillion years in a landfill...which is where these little wool babies come in:

Make your own using this tutorial from "Goodmama" or search "wool dryer balls" on Etsy to find one of the many sellers making them. These balls are non-toxic, all-natural and biodegradable. Win-win-win!

Not getting the flu shot? Here are some tips to stay healthy this season...

Upon deciding that I would NOT be partaking of the flu shot (in spite of my daily close proximity to the raging germ-farms known as six year-olds) I decided I had to take alternative action. There is a ridiculous plethora of misinformation available on the world wide web about the cold and flu virus. I have complied the steps I will be taking, as well as debunking some of the common myths associated with these nasty illnesses.

Truths:

1) If you are experiencing vomiting and diarrhea without any upper-respiratory flu symptoms (ie cold symptoms) you are likely experiencing gastroenteritis, and not the flu. Since the flu virus is a respiratory illness these symptoms generally must be present to confirm a diagnosis of influenza.

2) Feeding a cold and starve a fever, or vice-versa will not cure what's ailing you. It is best to give your body enough fuel to fight whatever is ailing it. Studies have shown that it is wise to avoid dairy products while one is experiencing a cold or flu, as they tend to promote mucus production in the body...you know as well as I do, when you're sick, you've got plenty of mucus going on without compounding the problem. Stick to warm soups and teas...As a general rule, the more liquids the better. Warm beverages have been shown to have a soothing effect on those suffering from a cold or the flu.

3) Super-dosing on Echinacea and zinc won't prevent you from catching a cold or the flu. Studies have disproved this methods time and time again...They simply are not effective on a consistent enough basis.

4) If you go outside in winter without your coat on, or with wet hair, you'll be chilly, but you won't "catch your death." Most of us are well aware that germs spread disease, not temperature. The reason we get colds more often in the winter is not because it's cold outside, but rather because we prefer to stay indoors where it is warm. The warm indoors becomes a veritable breeding ground for germs as we all breathe in each other's coughs and sneezes...Gross, I know.

Tips for Survival:

Studies have shown that we are most contagious in the 24 hours BEFORE we even display any cold or flu symptoms. That certainly makes the "prevention" method a tricky gamble. If your find yourself in the throes of a cold or flu, here are some tips I've complied to expedite the healing process, and keep your sickness to yourself.

1) REST! Don't worry, you are not SO important that your job cannot function without you for a few days...and trust me, if you wipe out the whole office by sharing your illness, you'll be even less popular with the boss. Your body regenerates best while sleeping, so help it out! Also, quarantine yourself. No sleeping with your partner (not that (s)he'd want to sleep with your sweaty carcass anyways, right?) and stick to your bedroom as much as possible.

2) Drink fluids, preferably water, unless you can't keep food down, then try juicing some fresh fruits and veggies...Hint: no Fruitopia or Snapple "all natural" literally means NOTHING. Broth-based soups and herbal teas are also soothing for a cold sufferer.

3) Your mom was right, eat chicken soup...and not just because it's comfort food. Home made chicken soup (yes, I mean the boil-the-bones-with-herbs-peppercorns-and-veggies kind...Campbell's doesn't count) has actually been proven to speed healing time because of it's anti-inflammatory properties. It also has the opposite effect on mucus production than dairy products, as it seems to promote mucus drainage. Once again, gross, I know.

4) If you make it a habit to open your windows for a little while each day, you'll promote better fresh-air circulation, and ensure that at least some of the germs have a place to go other than into your body. While prevention is the best "cure," if you're sick, you'll definitely want to keep the windows open to air out your room at least once a day. It will likely be a welcome ritual for those suffering from fever anyways.

5) One column I read suggested washing (or changing) the bed sheets daily. While this practice may not have any real germ-fighting merit, it certainly ups the comfort-level.

6) You can actually shorten the duration of the flu if you take an anti-viral such as Tamiflu as quickly as possible after you become symptomatic, if you want to go the medicinal route.

Of course I hope you don't get the flu, but in the event that you do, at least you (hopefully) won't feel entirely powerless.

Here is an excellent home-made chicken soup recipe you can request your significant other make for you, if you are confident of his/her epicurean abilities. In the event that your spouse is a spaz in the kitchen, and you fear you may wind up MORE sick if (s)he cooks for you, I recommend whipping up a batch now and freezing it for a rainy day.

Dinner for the Week

The theme for this week's meal plan is "Quick and Cheap." After S and I spent $300 stocking up at Costco last weekend, we figured we'd better try to make use of what we already have. I have found buying frozen vegetables works best for us. We were always buying fresh with the best intentions, but we were throwing away so much spoiled produce that it became apparent there HAD to be a better solution. Many nutrition experts say that frozen vegetables are just as "healthy" as fresh, and sometimes more so. The longer vegetables sit in your refrigerator, the more nutrients they lose. Frozen veggies are picked at their prime and are often frozen within hours of harvest. The freezing process locks in the freshness, thus making the frozen broccoli in your freezer a better pick than the head that's been sitting in your fridge since last Wednesday...They also taste better than canned and have no added sodium...just avoid the kind frozen in butter or cream sauce...it's not the same thing.

So, today I kindly gave myself the day off, and spent it catching up on all the things I've been letting slide. This included washing my floors, and hanging out with the furbaby.

For many, Toronto calls to mind a monolithic concrete jungle with little green space, but this is simply not the case. Right beside my apartment is a veritable forest over 125 years old! Sherwood Park serves as a green respite for Yonge and Eglinton-ites, but it is also an off-leash park, which really appeals to my city-dog. We try to get over to the park at least once a week...understandably more often in the summertime, and less so in winter...It's a great opportunity for Loki to run free, and to socialize with other dogs which helps to teach him his place in the pecking-order of life...God knows we let him forget all too often...bad over-indulgent owners!

It's such a beautiful slice of the city that it's easy to forget I am mere feet from bustling Yonge St.

As if to remind us that we, in fact, were still in the big city, CP24 and City TV newscasters were everywhere, as were volunteer search teams and police officers. Apparently there was a body-search going on in the forest...I guess you can never really have it all.

I have been realizing of late, that tying this whole wedding theme together is going to be more tricky than I originally thought...When I get excited about some thing I tend to over-do it, and that's what I feel is happening here. My original vision for a "simple, elegant evening" has since shifted to a "shabby-chic garden party."

In keeping with the new (and FINAL!) theme, I have corralled some really delicious wedding detail inspiration to try and keep me focused...I am definitely distracted by anything painted white and distressed...it's a curse...

I LOVE the idea of incorporating moss into the escort card display. Neither of the following pictures are quite what I have in mind, but I'll certainly keep you posted when I have created my own chef d'oeuvre...though I'm not thinking it will be for a while yet.

I abhor the ribbon on this example, but you get the idea.

My mom found EXACTLY the birdcage I was looking for at Homesense. My vision is for this little beauty to house cards on the day...once again, sans ribbon.

I LOVE the idea of creating a monogram entryway at the ceremony à la Martha...here the ribbon makes the cut.

Given that birds are a staple of shabby-chic decor, and the fact that we have a bit of an avian-theme running throughout the day, I thought these little birdies would be perfect nestled atop our cake. My original thought was monogram, but this is more unique.

Overall, I think the new theme is going come together...between the paper, and the birds, and the bees, and "Oh Happy Day," and the shabby-chic garden party and...Oh la la! What HAVE I gotten myself into?

Who am I kidding? I relish every second of this...<3

Vintage Halloween Postcards...Love!

I am certain most people would agree with me when I say that the days of the handwritten note, and "sail mail" for that matter, are pretty much dead. The once time-honoured tradition of sending friends and family handwritten greetings are relegated to post-wedding thank-you cards, and the odd holiday greeting card. No doubt the new trend of mass-emailing is better for the environment, but it is certainly not "better" for forging deep personal connections. In this era of Facebook et al I find it amazing that I know "so much" about people (like, for example, when they just got out of the shower, or got home from the gym), that I know so little about...

In honour of Halloween's impending arrival, and in a last-ditch effort to inspire people to put pen to paper (don't worry, I see the irony of me writing this online) I have collected an ADORABLE assortment of vintage halloween postcards. In the late 1800's and the early 1900's, people regularly sent these greetings to one another...I just think some of them are so striking and eerie, that I had to share them with you.

Aren't they just gorgeous? I have heard collectors will pay a pretty penny for these little babies too...

Wedding Wednesday...and 10 Conversations

I have decided to relegate wedding talk to one day a week on my blog. This decision stems from a comment made by my future mother-in-law, who, upon reading my blog for the first time, asked me what I was going to think about after my wedding was over. I know that she's right. I have been putting the amorphous "wedding" before, well...everything else these days. I already have girlfriends warning me that I am setting myself up for the "post-wedding blues," which tends to crop up when brides have unrealistic expectations for their "big day."

The other trap I want to avoid is best illustrated by a Carrie Bradshaw quote...I realize I risk losing credibility here...but I really have to be sure I don't "let the wedding get bigger than Big." Essentially, and I think a lot of girls fall into this, I have to remember that the wedding is a means to a MUCH bigger end...my lifelong marriage to Stephen. I truly think that couples would be better served spending the months leading up to their nuptials doing courses on communication, and really focusing on the "after the wedding" preparations...although admittedly, it's not NEARLY as fun.

To honour this newfound "wisdom," I have decided to do two things: the aforementioned ONCE weekly wedding post...although as it gets closer to the wedding I may HAVE to break this to keep myself from exploding with excitement.

I have also purchased this book:

which seeks to educate couples (young and old) how to effectively communicate, and avoid common pitfalls associated with communication. Steve and I have been making a genuine effort to follow all of the "ground rules" outlined in this book. We have already instituted a daily "Wine Time," and are seriously trying to eliminate "you language," as well as "absolutes" from our arguments. It has certainly changed the way we disagree, and I highly recommend this book for any couple, but especially for those who will be getting married soon.

Now, enough serious stuff! Next week I promise to post a more lighthearted post of beautiful wedding inspiration!

As an aside, I know I am kind of all over the map with this blog right now. As I continue building the content here, my goal is to create an inspirational lifestyle blueprint of sorts. I feel limited right now with my work schedule (I literally work 12 hours some days) so I will be living vicariously through the inspiration I find around me until my schedule slows down in June...At that point, I plan to actually start LIVING inspiringly, as opposed to just reporting how others do...until then, bear with me!

Sorry I am posting so late...I am just coming out of a heart-attack induced coma brought on by a highly unexpected Maple Leaf's victory last night...

As many of you know, I am shamelessly in love with Etsy, the site for all things handmade. I, personally, have yet to find anything on Etsy that is not utterly gorgeous...however that doesn't mean ridiculous items don't exist. I recently found Regretsy...this site is dedicated to seeking out and mocking the worst of the worst Etsy finds. The writing on this site is what makes it truly hilarious. "Helen," the site's curator, describes each find with a caustic commentary. Basically, I've been laughing all week...but I don't feel good about myself...it's like laughing at a person who just fell down...you know they may be hurt, but sometimes you just can't help yourself.

This week, once again, the theme is quick, easy crock-pot recipes...What DID they do before the advent of these babies? The flavours here are a little more eclectic, but all of the recipes are definitely delish...the pizza is definitely a twist on tradition...don't feel confined to the veggies they recommend. Roast whatever you like. The pizza is sweet and mellow... definitely an epicurean adventure.

I would like to introduce to you my absolute favourite shop in the universe: Pistachio. This eco-conscious apothecary cum gift shop has such an amazing selection of, well...everything! It's all ecologically friendly (a bonus), and it's all totally beautiful (double-bonus!)

It is the ultimate one-stop shopping experience for the environmentally-minded Torontonian...Need a gift for your girl friend's new baby? Done! Need a card to go along with it? Done! Ran out of face wash last night? Restock! Thirsty for some organic, unsweetened iced tea? Pick up a tin!

Steve and I always get mad props (yeah, I said it) from our friends for picking out the cutest cards...one of our friends even framed the card we gave her for her baby shower as a piece of art for her nursery. Pistachio is my not-so-secret source for the most beautiful paper products next to Paper Source in Chi-Town...but I'm mildly obsessed with paper, so you can't expect me to have only one source!

We picked up this organic cotton bath hoodie and a pair of organic soy socks for a friend's new little bairn.

The bath and body products are all natural, organic, and delish...as are the household cleaning products.

If you have yet to step foot in a Pistachio store near you, run, don't walk! Pumpkin Carving Inspiration

Soooo, as we are all well aware, Halloween is JUST around the corner. I absolutely love Halloween, and everything that's associated with it...but especially pumpkin carving.

I am going to be at home in Niagara this Halloween, and I can't wait to take an afternoon walk in the vineyards with my man, then carve up some pumpkins and roast the seeds. As I am wont to do, I took the liberty of researching some pumpkin carving designs, and I came upon some pretty impressive stuff. The Chicago Tribune culled together a pretty impressive gallery, which you should definitely check out here for unbelievable pumpkins like this elephant:

Of course, I also checked out Her Majesty Martha Stewart's site, where I often find my best inspiration. I have used this Haunted Pumpkin Village before, and I may use it again, because it's pretty fun to do.

I also did these Owl Pumpkins using gourds.

They were nice because I didn't actually have to carve the pumpkin and make a huge mess, but they didn't light up...also I don't know if you've ever tried to cut one of those little decorative gourds before, but they're like cinder blocks.

A few years back I was wild for these white pumpkins, but I couldn't find them anywhere, so you can only imagine my elation when I found some at the little fruit and vegetable vendor by my house last week.

I may have to pick up a few just because they're so ethereal and creepy looking, and they make stunning luminaries...Now all I have to do is convince my dad to let me use his power drill...

OOOOH! As well! S and I had our engagement pictures this past Sunday, so hopefully I will have a few to post up here tomorrow! I can't wait to see them, and share them with you!

Crafty Aspirations

If you spend any time at all searching through the back of your closet, you will certainly find at least one ancient wool sweater that you NEVER plan on wearing again. If you're like me, it's because you shrank the daylights out of it in your haste get your laundry done one day...five years ago. The good news is, that shrunken sweater may actually prove quite useful. The "art" of shrinking your sweater in the laundry machine is also called "felting." It's the process by which "wool" becomes "felt." Wool felt is exceptionally warm, it doesn't fray, and it's super easy to work with.

Personally, I am planning on felting three sweaters this weekend...Yes on purpose. How am I going to do it? Follow along with my oh-so-scientific experiment.

Felting a Wool Sweater: A Highly Scientific Experiment

Question: What will happen to a wool sweater if placed in the washing machine on a VERY hot cycle, then dried in the dryer on high-heat?
Hypothesis: I hypothesize that the fibres of said sweater will mat together, and the sweater will become felt.
Method/Testing:
-Place sweater in washing machine
-Turn machine onto HOT cycle
-Run sweater through washer
-Place sweater in dryer
-Turn dryer on HOT
-Leave it for 60 minutes
-Remove sweater from dryer
-Admire newly felted sweater
-If not felted to satisfaction, repeat once or twice.
Outcome:FELT!

THAT, my friends, is how easy it really is to felt a sweater.
Now that you've successfully felted your sweater, what the devil are you going to do with it? This is the fun part.

Handwriting Fonts for Peas...

Let's face it, most fonts are pretty boring. They just can't showcase your personality the way your handwriting can. When it comes to convenience and speed, typing certainly wins out, but it simply doesn't leave much room for creativity. Wouldn't it be nice if you could create a font using your OWN handwriting? I know, right? Crazy talk...Or is it? In my search for jazzy fonts to juice up my wedding stationery and my pretty little blog, I googled "handwriting fonts" and stumbled over Fonts for Peas. This delicious website takes YOUR own, special brand of handwriting and turns it into a font for all to download. But that's not the best part...the BEST part is, that if you have hideous chicken scratch writing, you are now officially saved! This website allows you to download some of the prettiest fonts I have yet to find!
